Spotlight On... 45caliber (Ricky De Keyser III)

Where do you live (general location only)?

Caloocan City, Philippines

How long have you been collecting?

I've started March 2005, so around 6 years,

What got you started on collecting these toys?

When I was a kid, I only got a few toys. But after I saw a GX-01R displayed in a toy store located at Landmark Makati, that is where I started to do research on the Soul of Chogokin line and I was amazed to see a Grendizer.

What do you collect?

My main line was the Soul of Chogokin, also have a few Aoshima/Miracle House, a few MaxFactory and some Fewture EX's, some Gashapons and Trading Figure as long as it is a robot-related. I also have some G1 Transformer which I have since I was a kid.

What is your collecting philosophy (only purchase MIB, save and seek out specific items, etc.)?

I opened all the toys i bought.. as much as possible I do not tranform or combine a robot the second time around.. after the combination and some decent posing. I will immediately put it on my display cabinet and leave it there. I am a box lover. If given a chance, I always choose a near mint box as much as possible (thanks to omniclone of for making it possible to have a mint box) and wrap it with a plastic cover and store it in my closet.

Approximately how many items do you own (if you are comfortable answering)?

About 98 Soul of Chogokins (includes the normal and variants) plus 14 more as my doubles, particularly the combiners, around 21 Aoshima/Miracle House, 6 MaxFactory, 8 from the EX line of the Fewture, a few Revoltechs and SRC's and lots of Gashapons and Trading Figures.

How do you display them (i.e., in or out of boxes, grouping, etc.)?

I display them all in sealed cabinets. When I started, I displayed them by series (e.g., getters to getters and mazingers to mazingers), but later when my robots started to multiply like gremlims, that is when I started squeezing them inside the cabinet to the point that as long as there is a space I squeeze them in.

Are any items in your collection from your childhood (i.e., specifically owned and played with as a child)?

Yes - a 1988 (I think) Volt In Box Voltes V from Bandai America, and a 1977 Daimos.

What is your favorite piece?

For now the would be my recently acquired Fewture Shin Getter followed by the Fewture Getter 1.

What is the most rare and/or unique piece in your collection?

That would be the Hobbyworld exclusive Getter by Miracle House/Aoshima which is limited to 10 pieces worldwide. Got this accidentally by my brother in law from Japan. What I wanted is a Black Getter Ryoma from Fewture, but this is what he got for me. At first I was very angry for the so called "mistaken purchase".

What is at the top of your WANT list (if you are comfortable answering)?

That would be the GX-01RB Mazinger and the GX-10B Black Borot, but i have no plans on getting them since the price went insane - not unless some low price crosses my path. LOL.

How does your significant other (if you have one) feel about your collection?

Hahahaha. 50/50. When the item is just a small one, for example a revoltech, I can get these inside the house easily without being yelled at. But when the box is huge and looks expensive, that's where David Copperfield magic begins. LOL. There are some cases that I will hide it in the car's trunk and get it early in the morning (2 AM the most) when she was asleep, LOL,

Do you have any good collecting stories you wish to relate (i.e., an amazing find or haul, meeting fellow collectors, etc.)?

My first purchase was the GX-04 Grendizer which I got March of 2005. My second was the GX-01R Mazinger and the GX-02R Great Mazinger and the third was the GX-06 Getter Robot, and got it sold by June of 2005 when I got married and had some financial problems. But I never gave up. By September 2005, I've started collecting the normal variants and after completing these, I found myself hunting the variants and exclusives. The rest was history for me.

This was my first arragement way back in 2005. During that time, I only had I think less than 30 Soul of Chogokins and all were just the normal variants.

Are there any toys you would like to see made?

Perhaps a Mazinkaiser by Fewture, a Shin Getter 3 by Aoshima, but that would surely hurt my wallet, so hopefully not. LOL.

What do you most get out of this hobby (friendship, joy, escape from everyday life, etc.)?

Got some friends here and there, particularly the "bakalboys" group (metalboys in English translation). Having my robots in my room, glancing at them whenever I am tired in my daily work - that made my day. Surely a stress reliever. Makes me feel that I am always a kid at heart.

Any final thoughts you wish to relate?

There's nothing wrong in collecting some expensive stuff as long as you are happy. There is always a limit. Know your limits and go beyond it. Robot collecting is only next to loving my wife, my parents, and my pets. After all, this is just a hobby. But the feeling of being a kid at heart again is priceless. More robots to come,

And by the way, I had an interview which was aired locally here in the Philippines way back August of 2008, but the language is Tagalog I think. Here's the link.
