Spotlight On... Mazfan (Bren)

Where do you live (general location only)?

Boston, MA

How long have you been collecting?

11 years

What got you started on collecting these toys?

I gave my sister a computer that I didn’t need anymore. As a thank you, she bought me GX-02. I am a huge Mazinger Z fan (hence my screen name); however, I was not familiar with Great Mazinger (the series was not shown in the Philippines). Owning GX-02 made me want to get GX-01. This was the catalyst of my addiction.

What do you collect?

Just SOC’s and nothing else. I am a bit of a purist. Okay, I also have most of the SPECs and I do have the Aqaurion GE-01.

What is your collecting philosophy (only purchase MIB, save and seek out specific items, etc.)?

I have the color/regular versions of the SOCs from the first to almost the latest. I do have some of the SOC variants/special editions and one B&W one (a friend gave me the Combattler B&W as a gift). I do not stray from the SOC line.

Approximately how many items do you own (if you are comfortable answering)?

About 90 to 100 total (SOCs, SPECs and my sole GE-01).

How do you display them (i.e., in or out of boxes, grouping, etc.)?

In those ubiquitous Ikea lit glass cases—just two, that’s why I am running out of space!

Are any items in your collection from your childhood (i.e., specifically owned and played with as a child)?

None.

What is your favorite piece?

My top three are GX-34 Gunbuster, GX-13 Dancouga and GX-31V Voltes V.

What is the most rare and/or unique piece in your collection?

GX-12MAG, GX-09MAB, GX-24N and GX-45A.

What is at the top of your WANT list (if you are comfortable answering)?

GX-08MAW, GX-11MAM and all of the special edition SPECs.

How does your significant other (if you have one) feel about your collection?

SOCs are what I get from my spouse for my birthdays and Christmas.

Do you have any good collecting stories you wish to relate (i.e., an amazing find or haul, meeting fellow collectors, etc.)?

Meeting the guys from the sites is one of the highlights of my SOC experience--They are the only ones where I live that can relate to my obsession. Okay, a few of my Filipino friends in Boston appreciate my collection too.

Are there any toys you would like to see made?

I want an SOC version on Balatak.

What do you most get out of this hobby (friendship, joy, escape from everyday life, etc.)?

My collection never fails to make me happy. I also find them as huge stress relievers. I also play with my collection--I mostly do this when I am watching TV with my spouse.

Any final thoughts you wish to relate?

We don’t have a big place and so, I can’t get another Ikea glass case. Where am I going to put my future SOCs? Well, I guess we just have to buy a bigger house :)
