Shogun Warriors by Mattel

These shogun toy robots were distributed by Mattel in the late 70's

Shogun Warriors Robot toy display shelfMattel was kind enough to bring Japan's wonderous toy line by Popy toys to the U.S.. In the late 1970s we were introduced to the characters Poseidon, Dragun, Raider, Mazinga Z, along with countless other diecast toys. Below are pictures of some of the main robots in the series. My childhood favorite was Poseidon, the yellow tank track robot. Note that only the first verson of Poseidon came with folding tank tracks and folding missile launchers (Japan saw this option too). Then we also have distinct variations in others such as Mazinga Z. In general the first versions had more features and stickers. As time went by, the features were deleted to save time. Also missiles went from being pointey to having dulled off tips in the later releases.

As you can see, the right arm was also a shooting fist in the older Japanese version of the toy. In this incarnation the fist was fused on the arm.

Raider

Raider

Hmmm..., looks like Getta Robo II doesn't it? But this descendant, Raider, is better equipped with a jet pack.
